The importance of eye examinations

Our eye examinations usually last about 30-45 minutes. We have a general routine we perform for every patient but as each patient is individual, the optometrist will tailor the eamination accordingly, which, guarantees you a thorough examination executed smoothly, keeping you as relaxed as possible.

As well as including all tests to check for your sight and to see if any vision correction is required (e.g. spectacles, contact lenses) we also check for any potential eye disease like Glaucoma, Cataract, Macular degeneration to name a few.

Our equipment includes a digital retinal camera at the East Barnet Branch, which allows us to take photographs of the inside of your eyes so even small abnormalities can be detected, recorded and compared in future checks. Other tests we will carry out include binocular assessment (how well the eyes work together), peripheral visual field analysis and intraocular pressure measurement.

The Optometrist will always explain the results of the various assessments and you will be given an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The recommendations given at the end of the eye examination by the Optometrist will take into account factors such as your working environment, lifestyle and any leisure pursuits you have, so we can meet your visual needs in the best possible way.

Retinal Imaging

Our East Barnet Branch is equipped with a state of the art Digital retinal camera. This is used to capture photographic images of the back of your eyes. This technique allows us to screen for many different eye diseases as it enables us to inspect the retina in far more detail.

The detection of certain conditions such as Glaucoma, Diabetes, Hypertension and Age related Macular Degeneration can be made easily and earlier thus limiting any unnecessary loss of vision. The images taken are stored and can be recalled, therefore enabling the Optometrist to compare these from one visit to the next, allowing even subtle changes to be detected aiding in early diagnosis.

Childrens Eyecare

Good eyesight is crucial in making sure a child develops to their full potential both at school and socially. Research has shown that 20% of school-aged children have an undiagnosed vision problem. As 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually, many children cannot see well enough to reach their full potential or enjoy everyday childhood activities as much as they could. A child may not realise if their vision is not clear – they assume the way they see is normal. Therefore, regular eye examinations are advised for all children under the age of 16 at least once a year.

Typical warning signs to look out for:

1: An eye appearing to drift inwards/outwards
2: Headaches
3: Frequently rubs eyes or blinks a lot
4: Screws up eyes when reading or watching television
5: Difficulty concentrating and avoids reading, writing or drawing
6: Develops behavioural problems

We provide free NHS eye examinations for all children under 16 and those under 19 and in full time education. If a child is found to need spectacles, a contribution is provided by the NHS.
We stock a wide range of spectacles specially designed for children’s faces to choose from.

Cataract & Glaucoma Referral Refinement Schemes

East Barnet Branch Only:

Charrington Cross Liversidge and Partners has been accredited and contracted by Barnet NHS PCT to provide additional Cataract and Glaucoma assessments.

This allows Barnet NHS to reduce unnecessary referrals and reduce the waiting times for patients due to have further investigation and management.

For Patients being referred for Cataracts: During your assessment, we will evaluate the extent of your cataract and the impact it has on your vision, your eyes will also be examined to exclude any other conditions affecting your sight. We will then spend some time with you to discuss the options you have and if surgery is appropriate for you. If surgery is necessary, then we can refer you directly for a pre-operative assessment at the hospital of your choice.

For Patients being referred for Suspected Glaucoma: During your assessment, we will assess the Intra Ocular Pressures, carry out a Visual Field Screening and assess the Optic Nerve Head. The repetition of these tests significantly increases the reliability of the tests and therefore the risk of Glaucoma is assessed more accurately.

We have an extensive network of consultants that we refer to when necessary, tailoring each individual case to the appropriate specialist.
